Executive assistants are valuable staff members for upper-level managers. Their role includes more responsibilities and demands more initiative and training than entry-level secretarial positions. Keep reading to find out what kinds of courses you will see in an executive assistant program.

Courses for executive assistants are available at several colleges and universities as part of undergraduate certificate and associate's degree programs in fields such as administrative assisting, executive assisting and office technology. These programs typically cover essential office skills, including the use of common business software, along with basic business topics; other subjects are as follows:

  • Priority management

  • Presentations

  • Time management

  • Communications skills

  • Office software

  • Grammar;

Business Introduction Course

This course focuses on teaching a student about the basics of business operations and administration. Business principles, economics and management are covered. This course is usually taken in the second year of study when a student has completed general education credits, and it often is the first core class a student takes.

Keyboarding Course

Keyboarding is a basic skill that enables an executive assistant to perform his or her job efficiently. A typical typing class teaches standard QWERTY keyboard and 10-key number pad skills. Students usually take keyboarding as one of their first classes. Most programs include several keyboarding courses that build student's typing skills.

Computer Applications Courses

Executive assistants use computer programs on a daily basis to complete job duties, so a solid knowledge of computer applications is important. This course teaches students about software programs and Internet basics. This course may be taken at any time during a training or degree program.

Business Communications Course

Communication is a major part of an executive assistant's job. This course is often taken at the beginning of a degree program; it offers an introduction to all types and styles of communication in business. Students learn how to write professionally, deliver effective presentations and communicate effectively and appropriately in a variety of business settings.

Business Accounting Course

A business accounting course teaches students the basics of business finances. Students learn accounting principles that directly relate to business administration, such as payroll management, financial statement creation and tax calculation. This course, which teaches a student how to manage the financial side of a business office, is often taken in the later part of a degree program.

Human Resource Management Course

Human resource management involves working with employees, managing schedules and hiring new employees. Topics covered include creating policies, managing employees and maintaining a safe working environment. This course is usually one of the last classes a student takes.
